Polyvinyl Butyral Resins (Brief / known as PVB resin) is produced from the condensation react of PVA (Polyvinyl Acetate) and nButyrayaldehyde, which is a thermoplastics resin, due to its unique chemicals structure it contains three major functional groups:
- ButyralGroup,
- HydroxylGroups and
- AcetylGroups.
These three functional groups make PVB resins contain several very extinguishing properties listed as follow:
| Functional Group & Molecular Weight | Properties |
| Butyral Group | a. Good flexibility
b. Good compatibility with base resin c. Better water resistance d. Soluble in nonpolar solvent. |
| Acetyl Group
(The Residual Acetate Group) |
a. Higher Tg value
b. Solution viscosity |
| Hydroxyl Group
(OH Group) |
a. Better adhesion
b. Higher reactivity with thermosetting resin. c. Soluble in polar solvents. |
| Degree of Polymerization | a. Increase film toughness
b. Easy control on softening point c. Control on the adhesion d. Control on the solution viscosity |
Due to above unique properties, PVB can be widely used in variety of applications as follow:
| Properties | Applications |
| Strong adhesion (to glass, metal, wood, plastics ,leather, ceramics) | a. Coating on glass, metal, wood, leather, plastics
b. Adhesion enhancer for above substrates. |
| PVB is excellent film form with high toughness and flexibility | a. Lamination/adhesion for safety glass.
b. Protective coating primer |
| Odorless and nontoxic | a. Widely used in skin contact products
b. Food contact products and inks |
| Mechanical properties can be control by the degree of polymerization | Easy to control to meet the applications need, so can be widely used in various applications. |
| Can crosslink with many resins like Phenolic, epoxy, urethane, urea and melamine resin | Easily apply in many resins compounding system. |
| Can blend with nitrocellulose and ketone resin to increase its hardness | Can be applied in wood and leather applications. |
| Good film properties also can be adjust by plasticizers | Can be used in various coating and lamination applications. |
| Compatible to most of the major plasticizers | Can be widely used in plastics field |
